“Falcons in a rush to improve pass protection” [Atlanta Journal-Constitution]

Well, those headlines pretty much tell the story.  The Falcons offense was abysmal yesterday.

Although not really.  I mean they actually had several very long drives, which either ended in field goals (only 1 did, obviously) or missed field goals.  The problem on these drives was in large part bad field position, which plagued the Falcons all day.  The drives fell apart at the end, however, for the same reasons that the other drives never started.

More breakdown of the game and the box score after the jump.

The defense, despite the appearance of the final score, was pretty good.  The first half TD was a pick-six off of Harrington’s hands, and through three quarters all the defense allowed was a field goal.  All of this despite the aforementioned poor field position throughout the game, which affected the defense as well (in other words, the Vikings had good field position most of the game).  The TD midway through the 4th was on a freakish tip play followed by a great run by Peterson past defenders who had overpursued, and the final TD was another pick-six of Harrington.  Overall, not much to complain about defensively.

Which leads us back to the offense.  As mentioned in one of the headlines, pass protection was a problem.  It wasn’t the only one.  Harrington got a little audible-happy, and he took entirely too long to make them.  Then, once he was done, it’s not entirely clear he ever should have audibled in the first place.  The plays he audibled to didn’t work so well.

The bottom line is the offense was nowhere near in sync.  This may just be a matter of Harrington and the other starters not having enough snaps with each other yet.  But who are we kidding, no Falcon fan can be happy or optimistic about what they saw yesterday.  We’ve got a lot of work to do.

Here’s the box score of the game from Yahoo!.

falcons, I feel for you trying to be optimistic with Joey as the QB. He just isn’t a very good QB. detroitlions.contentquake.com
